I am an Australian planning to tour China with a group by land. Entering from Laos and departing to Kazakhstan. What type do I need and any special documents required for the application?

You should apply for tourist L type visa. The basic documents include your passport, passport copy, application form, and a passport-sized photo taken within six months. Usually hotel bookings and round-trip transportation tickets are also needed. If you can't get them, you may need to contact a travel agency to issue you an invitation letter.
