I have some time constraints which require me to apply for entry permit right now. I cannot wait for a formal invitation letter to apply for the F type entry permit.

Well, I think you can apply for a tourist L type and then use it to enter and attend the conference. Just remember that if asked by immigration officers, reply that you go there for leisure purposes.To apply for the L type, you need to book hotels and round-trip tickets before submitting the application.
