Stephan, if it is a school which can issue you the admission letter and JW form, I think you can possibly change your L type to X type. Otherwise, you cannot do that.
Actually, you are advised to apply for an F type to study Kung Fu in PRC. You can convert the L type to F type at the exit and entry administration of the local PSB.

My current L type runs out in 2 weeks and it was a 160 day one, if I go with the forms will I be able to get a 6 month visa on the f type ? Thanks

It's hard to get a six-month stay duration on the F type, but you can have a try. Where do you learn Kung Fu? If it's not an official organization, I doubt whether you can get the F type. Maybe you can just extend your L type.
