A Chinese university wants to invite me to China. What visa should I apply for

(Tourist is not an option, as I have just had a tourist type, and am not eligible for another one). What supporting documents should the university provide so that I can apply for the entry permit?

Tom, you can apply for an F type. The university can write an invitation letter to you. Along with other relevant documents such as your passport and copy of its data page, the application form affixed with a passport-style photo, you can apply for the F type at the CVASC.

Isn't "F" a business visa? I've been told, that for a business type entry permit I'd also need a "business licence copy", which a university, of course, cannot provide.

F type is mainly for cultrual exchange purpose. M type is for business purpose. It's right you should apply for an F type. The business licence copy of a company is not needed.
