About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

20 hour stop over in Urumqi

I am flying Australia --> Guangzhou (short 3 hour stop over in the airport) --> Urumqi (20 hour stop over) --> Almaty. Can i leave the airport in Urumqi and stay at a hotel, and sight see, with the 72 hour stop over visa? The list above doesn't mention Urumqi, so this is the only reason i'm asking. Thanks!!

Dan, the 72 hour policy is not applicable to your situation because it has not been carried out in Urumqi, and 72 hour policy only allows you to transit in ONE Chinese city.
As for your situation, you should apply for a transit G type or tourist L type ahead of your journey.
