Joy, you don't need the entry permit for HK as long as the stay there is less than 90 days. And if you fly from HK to an inland city that has adopted 72/144 hour free transit policy and then you fly onward to a third country or region or fly back to the US, you can possibly enjoy the free transit and no entry permit is required. But if you don't qualify, I'm afraid you need to apply for an entry permit for mainland PRC beforehand.
