Visa for Layover from Chicago

Do we need an entry permitif we are traveling from Chicago to Bangkok via Hong Kong? The layover would be 3 hours and it's only on the way there. We are flying standby from Chicago to Hong Kong and have a booked/confirmed seat from Hong Kong to Bangkok.

Thanks in advance,
Ashley
