Rosy, you can enjoy the free transit in Shanghai for both legs of your trip. When you board the plane in Mexico, you should inform the carrier that you want to use the 72 hour free transit.
When you return, you don’t need to inform the carrier because you just stay one night in Shanghai, you will be given the 24 hour direct transit. You need to apply for a temporary stay permit at the airport and then you can leave the airport to stay at a hotel.
Don’t worry! The consular officers at the immigration inspection can speak English.
Of course, you can apply for an entry permit is you are still worried.
