About:Hong Kong Octopus Card

I am traveling to Hong Kong for 5 days with a Family of 4, staying in the Kowloon area.

Is it feasible to buy the octopus card? Or just travelling in cabs would be cheaper collectively? Also, I am a little unclear. Do we get free MTR, bus rides on taking this card or is it more of a "not having to buy a ticket everytime"?

Taking cabs are quite expensive in the city. You are advised to buy octoupus cards, and ride on public transport. With the cards, you needn't buy tickets every time. Also, you can have some discount.
If you wanna enjoy the free MTR, you need to purchase Airport Express Travel Pass. It contains one/two single rides, plus 3 consecutive days of unlimited travel on MTR (except East Rail Line First Class, Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau stations), Light Rail and MTR Bus (Northwest New Territories).
