About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

72 hour or 144 hour visa exempt

US citizen flying into Bangkok. I am trying to make a visit to Shanghai.
Can I fly from BKK to PVG with a transfer flight through HKG and then from PVG direct flight to HKG for a stay there and then fly back to BKK

Eli, the transfer in HKG makes you ineligible for the free transit policy, because for the immigration officers, you fly from HK to PVG and then go back to HK. If you want to make use of the 72/144-hour free transit, you should take a direct flight from Bangkok to Shanghai.
