Monica, US passport holders can enjoy free entry to HK and Macau for a stay of no more than 90 days and 30 days respectively. So no visa is needed.
But as for Guangzhou, you need to apply for a visa in advance.
Or if you fly to Guangzhou for 3 days from HK, and after stopping in Guangzhou, you fly to Macau, in this way, you can use the 72 hour free transit in Guangzhou and no visa is needed.
