About:Chinese Embassy in Nigeria

In case of a holder of family visa which couldn't be extended in China due to less passport validity

And was asked to exit and come back to reapply what visa type should the person apply for?

Austine, you can renew your passport at the embassy of Nigeria in PRC and then try to renew your family visa (S1 type) in PRC.
But if it cannot be done within PRC, I’m afraid you need to exit first and then re-apply for a new S1 type to enter PRC.
