About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Vancouver - Osaka - Shanghai - Tokyo - Vancouver??

We are Canadians looking at a trip Vancouver - Osaka - Shanghai - Tokyo - Vancouver. Would this itinerary qualify for the 144 hour visa exemption in Shanghai? Or is it prohibited as we enter and leave via Japan, although 2 different regions of Japan? (If need be, we could return to Vancouver direct from Shanghai and skip Tokyo, please advise.)
Thanks!

Dan, no, it doesn’t qualify for the 144 hour free transit because after your transit in Shanghai, you fly back to Japan, but in principle, you should fly to a third country or region.
If you fly to Vancouver direct after stopping in Shanghai, you can use the free transit there.
