How was paper used back then?

I know how paper is used now and everything, but no one will tell me how it was used back then?

The usage of it doesn't change a lot. In old times, it was also largely used for writing and painting.
In addition, before the invention of glass, people would paste up windows with paper. Back then, a kind of oiled paper could be used to make umbrellas.
