About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Hong Kong to Shanghai with a separate trip to Japan.

Need to fly from Hong Kong to Shanghai, stay in Shanghai for just over 24 hours, then fly to Japan and back with a different set of tickets. After returning from Japan, stop over in Shanghai for around 48 hours then return to Hong Kong.

If the tickets are with different airlines, can we still get the 72 hour transit visa?
