multicity travel for a US citizen

I am considering a trip to HK for a few days, make a trip to Macau from there. Then fly from HK to Beijing and try to utilize the 72 hrs transfer to see the Great Wall and the Forbidden city. Is this possible to do? how does the 72 hrs visa free stay work? my flight from tokyo to HK is through Shanghai, HK to Beijing through Shanghai and then returning flight from Beijing to Tokyo also through Shanghai. I am a US citizen. Thanks

Romana, if you fly from HK to Beijing and then to a third country/region, it's possible to use the 72-hour visa-free transit. Upon arrival at the Beijing airport, you can follow the direction signs to head forward to the 72-hour free transit counter. You just need to show your passport and onward ticket to apply for it.

On your way from Tokyo to HK, you can enjoy this policy. However, on your way from HK to Beijing and back to Tokyo, you can't enjoy it because you stop over two Chinese cities.
