Ethan, it's hard to say. Sometimes it depends on your luck and the officer you meet with. If the person is not tough, you may not need to pay the fine. I advise you to get a 1-month tourist L type at the local PSB before your residence permit expires if you worry about problems. Or you can go to the aiport on July 31 and check in before 00:00 of August 1.

Thank you for your reply,
Does it change things If I am leaving China through Hong Kong (which Canadians do not require a tourist L type for).

Dear, I’m afraid it’s the same case. The most secure way is to go to the airport on July 31 and check in before 00:00 of August 1.

hi Ethan, usually if the duration of the overstay is less than 3 days. They will give you a written warning for first time offence. I once overstay for 24 hours and were given a written warning by the immigration and told not to repeat again (mine was multiple entry visa) and I'm free to go. By the time when I return to china the next trip everything was ok. There were no stop or check by the immigration. For your information a friend of my have the same issue and was also given a written warning. If the rules does change as the it was a 2 years ago. The fine is not more than RMB500 per day
