I am a US citizen with a current US passportI want to vacation in Beijing for 10 days Do I need anything besides my passport and photo ID?

Considering your situation, you need to apply for a tourist L type. So except your passport and copy of its data page, you also need to provide the application form affixed with a passport-style photo, round trip air tickets and hotel reservation. And then submit your application to the consulate general of PRC to apply for it.
