Does technical stop count?

On the way from Vancouver to Kathmandu we are stopping twice: Shanghai and Kunming, but one of the times I am not getting out of the plane (technical stop). Do I need visa, or technical stop does not count as a second city and I am eligible for 72 hours free transit?

Julia, sorry, a technical stop counts as a layover as well, so you are not eligible for the 72-hour free transit.
