I am travelling from the United States to Bangkok with a layover and plane change in Shanghai.

Do I need a visa to do this?
Also, Coming home from Thailand I land in Chengdu and then go to Shanghai to then fly to the United States.
Do I need it to do this?
I am getting different answers from different people and need to know

Thank you.

Hi Amy! On your way to Bangkok, you can enjoy the 144-hour free transit policy in Shanghai, so the entry permit is not required.

On your way back home, if the total layover time adds up to not more than 24 hours, you don't need the transit G type entry permit. If it's more than 24 hours, you need it.

Ok. So as long as my 2 layovers on the way home don't total more than 24 hours I will be ok without an entry permit. I was worried because we land in 2 different cities in China.

Thank you for your help.
