About:How to Travel to China without a Visa

Transit in Shanghai Pu Dong

I am a Sri Lankan national and a Permanent resident of Canada. I will be travelling from Vancouver Canada to Colombo Sri Lanka via Shanghai. Transit time in China is 9 hours and 5 minutes as per the travel itinerary. Do I need to have a visa to get my connecting flight? I have no plans to leave the airport.

Hi cooray,
I also have the same problem. I'm traveling form japan to Sri Lanka and have 19 hour layover. As per the comments and research I've done I think we can stay in the airport without an entry permit, but not more than 24hours. It's called direct transit. However if you want to exit PVG then you might need it. This is what I got out of the comments. Please re check it from the embassy or ticketing office.

" 2. For Direct Transit
No entry permit is required for foreigners who hold tickets to the final destination and have booked seats on international airlines, ships, trains transiting directly through China, and will stay for less than 24 hours and do not leave the specified transit area."

Thank you for your response Shifna,
I am going to reach out to a Chinese consulate and verify this before paying for my ticket. There are conflicting information in different places. It is indeed hard to get to speak to someone from an embassy too.
