If your layover time in Shanghai is less than 144 hours, and the last country you depart is different from HK, you can enjoy the 144 hour direct transit and no visa is needed.

Many thanks Toby just to clarify our cruise ship visit Shanghai's is about 13 hours and then cruise ends in Hong Kong we get off and want to stay 3 or 4 days in HK then direct flight home to New Zealand not sure what you mean by departing from a different country after leaving HK to get the 144 day free from visa visit again many tanks
