About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Not take second flight.. can I do that?

I used to live in SH and am returning to pick up clothes and my cat. Is it possible to buy a ticket from SH to Japan but not use the ticket to Japan? For example, I have a return ticket from LAX to PVG. If I buy a ticket from PVG to Tokyo, but don't use that flight... Would I be able to get the 72h visa but not actually use the Japan ticket (buy the ticket to Japan ONLY to qualify for the free transit, despite NOT actually flying to Japan - instead I would return to the USA before the 72h bid expires. Who would check this and what sort of problems would I experience?

David, if you can provide a confirmed ticket from PVG to Tokyo, I think you can get the 72 hour free transit. Iff you don’t take the flight and no one finds out that, it may be okay! But you are not advised to do that.

I've spoken to Chinese immigration authorities. While they didn't say the above plan wouldn't work - they did say it wasn't allowed. No huge surprise.

Ive now booked a flight to HK (site days HK doesn't qualify for 72 hour free transit, but two different agents at two different airports said it does). Arrive in China, pop over to HK and then back to SH, then stay in SH for 24 hours. Gonna be a hellish flight, but it gets me there.

Thanks
