72 Hour visa free transit in Beijing, but we exceed the 72 hours

We have booked flights to Beijing from London and then to Hong Kong as well as a hotel. Because of a change in airline schedule, our stay will now exceed the 72 hour free transit period by 7 hours. Do we need to apply for an entry permit or is the 72 hour period a rigid requirement.

Noel, you can contact with Beijing Airport Immigration Inspection by 0086-10-56095400 and consult if you can still use the 72 hour free transit. If not, I’m afraid you need to apply for a transit G type or tourist L type ahead of your trip.
