China southern from sfo via wuhan and guangzhou to manila

Am I eligible as a US citizen for the 72 hr transit visa waiver if my flight in wuhan doesnt require to get off at wuhan but I get off at guangzhou to catch my Manila flight or do I need a transit G type?

Jay, as you stop in two Chinese cities, you can't enjoy this 72-hour free transit. If your total layover time is not more than 24 hours, you can still use the 24-hour direct trasit scheme. However, if it's more than 24 hours, you need to apply for a G type entry permit in advance.
