Do I need to exchange my currency for shopping in shanghai?

or will most of the shops accept American money or even credit cards?

I am afraid that USD is not accepted. But you may swipe your credit cards at malls or shops with point of sale (POS). For your convenience, you are advised to convert your currency into CNY. :)
