From Hong Kong to Shanghai and back?

Can the city I arrive from (Hong Kong to Shanghai) be the same city I depart to (Shanghai to back Hong Kong)?

I'm going to Hong Kong and I'd like to spend 2 days in Shanghai too.

I'm an American traveling with a Japanese citizen.

Joe, sorry you can't. The cities must be different if you want to enjoy the free transit citizen. You may take this route: HK - Shanghai - Macau - HK.
