Buying multiple train tickets from one station

Planning on travelling by rail in September 2016 from Shanghai to Beijing, Beijing to Pingyao, Pingyao to Xi'an, Xi'an to Shanghai.
I live in the USA, but want to make sure that I have the tickets purchased in advance so that the planned itinerary goes smoothly.
Would it be possible for a friend of mine to buy all four of the trips from a station in Shanghai before I arrive in China?

You can buy all the trips together in Shanghai, but you need the original passport to do it.

I think you can find a booking agent to book all the trips for you online in advance instead. You only need to collect the paper ticket at the railway station after your arrival. This can help you to reserve the seat in advance.
