About:Chinese Lanterns

Americans using Chinese Lanterns

I see on TV shows that Americans like to maybe go to the beach, as a family, light their lanterns and let them go. Is there some type of meaning to this ritual or is it more just for fun? Does it symbolize something in particular? Thank you

I see. They are Kongming Lantern. People fly them to pray for blessing and good luck or express that they are missing their beloved ones.
