Traveling through Guangzhou

Hi I am traveling to Japan via Guangzhou and have a 18 hour layover. Do I need a visa? Also, if I don't have one can I leave the airport to stay the night in a hotel?

Moyoko, you don't need it. If you want to stay in a hotel, you can apply for a temporary stay permit at the airport so that you can leave. It's free.
