Travelling with no passport

Hi, I would like to know if I can travel without my passport on trains in China? My passport is currently have my work visa updated so I do not have it with me. However, I do know my passport number and I do have a photocopy, but I don't know whether this is sufficient enough?
Hope you can answer my question.
Thanks
Lee

The real-name policy and identity verification require the original passport. Otherwise, you are not allowed to buy the ticket and boarding.
