can chinese X2 visa be extended to an X1 type without traveling out of china?

if so which additional documents are required

Dear, you cannot extend X2 type to X1 type. But you can try to change X2 type to X1 type at the exit and entry administration of the local PSB. But I cannot tell you for sure that it will work or not.
If you can, the additional documents include your passport and its copy, the application form attached with a recent color photo, the admission letter from a school in PRC, JW201 or JW202 form as well as other relevant materials required by the exit and entry administration.

Dear, if you will study at another school in Guangzhou or Xiamen, it’s possible. Just to be sure, you can ask the school to consult about it at the exit and entry administration of the local PSB.
