About:Marriage Registration in China

Can I get married a foreigner with a residence permit and stay in China with him?

Hello, my name is Veronica and I am a citizen of Russia. I have a boyfriend here, he is a Mexican. He has been working in PRC for almost 1 year and has an official Z visa and a residence permit. Her is planning to stay in PRC for a longer period of time so we decided to get married here. I came to PRC on a tourist L type and it expires in one week. If we get married can I stay here for at least 2 weeks more or I should apply for an extension of my tourist L type? Thank you very much for your reply!

Veronica, you can get married with him and then apply for a family S type to stay with him in PRC. Because your tourist L type will expire in one week, you’d better apply for an extension for now and then make another plan. You should apply for an extension 7 days earlier before it expires at the exit and entry administration of the local PSB.

Hello, thank you for a quick response! I'm a little worried about the time... there is Chinese New Year ahead...How much is it to apply for "S" type? How long will it take to get this? I checked and there're "S1" and "S2" types. It means it's at the discretion of the Immigration Services right?

Dear, considering that you just need to stay for two more weeks in PRC and I’m afraid it's pressed for time to apply for S type, applying for an extension of your current L type is the best choice for you at present.

Dear, it usually takes 7 working days for you to change the tourist L type to S type. And if you get an S1 type, it takes 15 workings to get the residence permit.
As you said, whether you will be granted the S1 type or S2 type is at the discretion of the immigration service.
