Beth, if you enter PRC by cruise, you cannot enjoy the 72 hour free transit which is only applicable to those by flight. But if your total layover time in PRC is less than 24 hours, you can use the 24 hour direct transit. In this way, you don’t need to apply for an entry permit.
But if it’s more than 24 hours, you should apply for a transit G type or tourist L type beforehand.
