About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Can i use the 72hr visa if i fly from bangkok to Chengdu then back to Bangkok

Dan, if so, you cannot use it because you fly to the departure country after transiting in Chengdu. According to the policy, you should fly to a third country or region after your stopover in Chengdu.
