About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Can I qualify for the 72 (or 144 hour) policy in Shanghai?

We are starting in San Francisco, flying to Japan, and then to Shanghai. We have not picked our return to US flight yet, can we return by hopping though Hong Kong or back though Japan? Is it the ultimate destination or where you change planes?

Hi Norm! If you intend to make use of the 72-hour free transit policy, you should return by hopping through HK instead of Japan. The third country or region is not definitely the ultimate destination. If you lay over in somewhere on your way back, it can be the third country or region.
