Alex, since you travel on separate tickets and on unrelated airlines, you will do the following steps. In the country (city) that you will use to depart toward US via China, you will declare at check-in that you will travel to US via China (Guangzhou) using 24 hour visa free transit. You will present your flight bookings in the same time. Upon a short check you will be allowed to board the Guangzhou bound flight. Upon your landing the first thing that you will do is to approach 24/240 transit counter where you will apply (for free) for a temporary entry permit because you will have to exit the airside, formally enter China and collect your luggage and perform new check-in. So, here you will present your flight bookings and after a short check, you will be granted a permit. With a permit in your passport you will head to the immigration and formally enter China. Then you will collect your luggage and proceed to the check-in counters to perform new check-in. After that a usual procedure to reach your gate for a flight to US. This is it in short and I hope you have understood the explanation. Self transit with Guatemalan passport is fine and acceptable and you should just take care that you have at least 4 - 5 hours between the two flights in order to perform your self transit with absolute peace of mind. Have a nice journey.
