I've seen some people with a transportation card that's very small and attached to their keyring. How would I receive one ?

Oh, it is Yi Xing Ka. You can get one at the Transportation Card Service Center, whose Xidan branch is at the east side of Xidan Cultural Palace of Nationalities, Xicheng District. Just go for a try!
