About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Would we be able to get the 72 hour transit if we switch planes in Shanghai on the way to Beijing?

Hi, I had a question regarding the policy. We would like to fly from USA-Beijing-Hong Kong and enjoy the 72 hour free visa during our stop in Beijing. However, all our flights first stop in Shanghai on the way to Beijing and on the way to Hong Kong. The stop is only 1 hour to switch planes. Thank You for any help in answering our question.

Julie, if you stop in two Chinese cities, you cannot use the 72 hour free transit because according to the 72 hour policy, one is only allowed to transit in one Chinese city. But is your total layover time in Shanghai and Beijing is less than 24 hours, you can use the 24 hour direct transit. In this way, you don’t need to apply for entry permit.
Or you need to apply for tourist L type or transit G type in advance.
