About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Chicago to Thailand via Shanghai

I'm traveling from Chicago to Thailand with a layover in Shanghai. I'd like to have a long layover in Shanghai before my return trip to Chicago to explore for 12 hours. With a US passport coming from Thailand would I be approved for the 72 hour free visa?

Kirk, since you only stop in Shanghai for 12 hours, the 24-hour direct transit is fine for your situation.

Hi Kirk, with a United States passport (with validity of more than 6 months) and confirmed itinerary (make sure that you have confirmed return flight ticket), yes you may apply for the 72-hour free transit. When you check-in your flight in Bangkok, please make sure to inform your airline.
