Leaving and reentering within a week

I will be traveling to Shanghai and from there to another destination in SE Asia. Then I will return to Shanghai before going back to the states. Will a tourist visa allow me to leave and reenter China? Or if I am there less than 72 hours each time, is an entry permit required?
