Obviously, it wasn't Marco Polo. If you read some articles regarding of this road, you would know that the road came into being during the Western Han Dynasty. Zhang Qian could be regarded as the pioneer of this road.14

Yeah, Marco Polo wasn't even born when it was being built. The Silk Road was initially created in 600 AD, while Marco Polo was born in 1254 supposedly.4
