American coming from Hong Kong to Shanghai

Hello,

I have an American passport, and will be in Hong kong. I would like to do a side trip from Hong Kong to Shanghai. If I understand correctly, the 72hr policy will NOT apply if I fly BACK to Hong Kong? Is this correct? Will it be valid if I fly from Hong Kong to Shanghai and then from Shanghai to USA?

Dear, yes, you are correct.
But if you fly in such a route HK-Shanghai-USA and you transit in Shanghai for less than 72 hours, you can enjoy the policy and don’t need to apply for an entry permit in advance.
