About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Thailand-Shanghai-San Francisco in less than 72 hours

Hi! I am flying from Bangkok, Thailand to Shanghai, and then to San Francisco around 55 hours later on a confirmed flight (confirmed seats, U.S. Passport holder). Am I eligible for the 72 hour permit? Can I leave the airport and stay in a hotel in Shanghai? (We are not planning to leave to any other province or municipality).
