About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Do I have to go to the 72 HR visa service counter in Beijing Airport

If I advise the airline that I require 72 hr free transit on departure in San Francisco do I still need to go to the 72 hr transit service counter before clearing customs?

Sure as the officer need to stamp a stay permit on your passport.
