Hi Nathalie!
1. The process include three steps basically. First, prepare all required documents, like photocopy of passport, application form, round trip tickets, travel itinerary, and financial support proof. Second, submit the documents to the Chinese embassy or to Hong Kong Immigration Department by mail.
Third, wait for a certain period and collect your passport and visa.
2. If the embassy can be directly handled by the embassy, four working days are needed. If the application is sent to HK, you need to wait for four to six weeks.
3. In case that the application is sent to HK side, there is no fast service.
4. Global political circumstances does not affect the processing time at present.
5. The application form for all types are the same. It's available online. You can download one from the website of Hong Kong Immigration Department.
