It is said we can apply for a VISA available for 10-year period. How does it works?

Does that mean we can get entry into China at any time we want during this 10-year valid period ? Every time I want go, Do I need go to Chinese consul in advance for some kind of entry document or just directly go to China without doing anything ? Pleas tell me some detail. Thank you.
