About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

When to go through immigration for transit visa?

I have a booking from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur on to Shanghai, coming back direct to Singapore on separate tickets but with the same airline for the first two flights. I would like to use the 72 hour free transit. When I arrive in Kuala Lumpur, should I go through immigration to officially enter Malaysia or can I just transit directly to the Shanghai flight?
Thanks!

Jake, if you don't intend to leave the airport, you don't need to go through immigration and you can just transit to Shanghai flight. If you want to leave the airport, you need to go through the immigration.
