We are holidaying Shanghai n we do like to visit Mount Putuo temple.

At Shanghai South Long-distance Bus Station, you can take a bus to Putuo in around 4.5h. Buses are available from 06:55 to 19:30. After arriving, change to a city bus or taxi to Banshengdong Dock, where catch a ferry/boat to the mountain scenic area.

To fully enjoy the scenic spot, a whole day is enough, but a round trip from/to Shanghai can hardly be achieved. I suggest you stay there for a night and go back to Shanghai in the next day.
