3 nights Stay in China and Transit on the way back

I'm a NZ citizen planning to travel to France via PRC. My flight to France stops in PRC and I plan to stay for 3 nights then continue on to France. On the way back to NZ my flight transits in PRC. Which visa is suitable? Or can I apply for a transit permit when I land in there?

Rona, if you only stop in one Chinese city on each legs of the trip, then you don't need to apply for an entry permit, ie., you can use the 72-hour free transit policy both times.
